Why do we obey God’s commands? Is it out of fear? Or is it out of love?

One thing that God will never do is compel us to obey Him. This is rather surprising since He definitely has the power to do it. Why doesn’t he just zap us and make us do what He wants?

God may establish a clear and definite standard for you to follow, but He will never force you to do it. God desires for us to obey Him out of love. That’s it! He is looking for believers who will deny themselves every day, surrender their will to Him, pick up their cross, and follow Christ. Not out of some kind of fear that God will smite you if you don’t, or even to gain some kind of blessing, but out of genuine love for the Lord.

True Disciples Always Obey

If we are to be called true disciples of Christ, we must make obedience one of our core character traits. Think about how the eyes of God are constantly and unceasingly searching the nations for men and women who are ready to jump out of the crowd and say, “I am here Lord, send me!”

Just look at the way Jesus talked to people. He never compelled them to do anything, and that is why He started His commands with an “If.”

“If you are thirsty, come to me and drink.” – John 7: 37

“If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and cast the first stone at her.” – John 8: 7

“If you keep on obeying what I have said, you truly are my disciples.” – John 8: 31

We always have a choice to obey or reject God’s commands, but never forget that wrong choices will always lead to painful consequences. This is not because He is acting against us but because the enemy will sense a door has been left open and swoop in for the kill. Disobedience to God is indeed a sin.

Intimacy Breeds Love, and Love Breeds Obedience

This is why it is important, now more than ever before in history, to develop an intimate relationship with God. The more intimate you are with someone in a relationship, the easier it is to obey their requests out of pure love. It becomes more about wanting to please them at all times rather than thinking, “What do I get out of this?” Unlike humans, God is never selfish, and every command is ultimately for our own good.

There will be no hesitation whatsoever. If God tells you to do something and you find yourself hesitating, then it is time to acknowledge that there is someone else in that relationship that you love more than God – and that person is YOU! You are yet to fully surrender to Christ.

Obedience Brings Blessings

The sad truth is that as believers, we sometimes assume that there are certain areas of our lives that are off-limits to God. For example, you are always praying about finances but never allow God to direct you on how to handle your marriage or children. You are eager to hear what God has to say concerning your business decisions but disobey Him when He tells you to quit and join ministry.

The irony is that it is in these random and seemingly insignificant circumstances of life that we get to see the face of God. It may not be evident now, but one day we will finally realize that our obedience brought blessings to others.

The redemption of God combined with total obedience will always bear good fruit. It is only through obedience and humility that a person can be used by God to bless others, because obedience and humbleness ultimately unveils the reality of Almighty God.
